The internet is a vast repository of information, and it allows people around the world to access valuable information and resources from the comfort of their homes. Sometimes these resources or materials are documented and accessed in their original forms. If information is gleaned from a webpage then your research must indicate what webpage was used. One very important fact you must keep in mind is that you must reference all sources of information obtained while carrying out your research in order to avoid any accusation of plagiarism, which is the act of taking credit for another person's work either directly or indirectly.

 To a Writer, a citation can be defined as the description or the identification of the origin of the quotation or excerpt. A good citation consists of the following information:

1. Name of the author(S)
2. Title of article or chapter
3. Title of magazine, periodical or book
4. Volume or other identifier
5. Pages
6. Places of publication
7. Publisher
8. Date of publication
9. Other information that may be needed

Citation for materials obtained online should provide data that identifies a source, allows that source to be located and accessed when needed. Citations should contain the medium of publication (internet) and the date the content was accessed. In case the source is difficult to locate or a URL is required, the complete address should be listed within angle brackets after the date. In many cases, it is necessary to disclose the website that has made the research work available online. In summary, references to online works require much more information than references to prints.

In cases where a web page does not have an author, the title manual of style citations goes to the first position of the reference entry:

The first few words that begin a reference list entry (usually the title) and the year should be cited. Double quotation marks should be used around the title or abbreviated title: ("Child Immunization," 2001).

 In case the title of a webpage is short, then the full title should be used for the parenthetical citation. Articles obtained from the internet, should not be italicized in the reference entry but enclosed in quotations in the in-text citation, as is the case with a newspaper or magazine article. Reports found on the web should be italicized in the reference list.
